Rosemary comes from the latin name "Rosemarinus", meaning dew of the sea. They say about Rosemary "Where rosemary grows the missus is master". One Christian legend says that the flowers of the rosemary bush were once white until Mary hung her cloak to dry on it's branches. Rosemary has been associated with remembrance from the time of the greeks when students used to wear garlands of it in their hair to strengthen their memory during exam times. It became popular at weddings because it symbolises happy memories, love and fidelity, but it also became assosiated with funerals because it symbolised the memories of loved ones, mourners brought sprigs to the funeral and dropped them into the grave. Banks Herbal of 1525 claims that smelling rosemary regularly will keep a person young.
