Perfume MaterialsPerfume and Flavor Materials of Natural Origin by Steffen Arctander is a one in a million publication.

The book sits at my side on my bench as I blend. I refer to it everyday. It was originally published in 1961. Steffen Arctander began collecting natural aromatic materials and compiling notes on the production and origin of these materials. As well as the materials he brought back from his travels, he was sent samples from suppliers the world over. By 1958 he had an almost complete collection of perfume and flavor materials of natural origin.

Introducing Le Parfumeur Rebelle

A naughty name and an even naughtier logo. Curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out more about LPR, the natural and botanical perfumery establishment.

I contacted the editor of the site
Justine Crane. Justine is a lovely, warm woman who is incredibly open and upfront. No false pretenses or niceties, what you see is what you get. After chatting with her I began to understand more about what Le Parfumeur Rebelle was about and why she used such a bold logo on LPR website.

She puts it perfectly in the piece she wrote for NN, when she says "for those who don't appreciate coloring inside the lines". What this says to me is that LPR is open to creativity, individuality and originality. I like that. And the logo, while it never seems to become any less rebellious no matter how many times I look at it, it certainly has grown on me and reminds me of the good old days when I was the rebel, a punk rocker who wished for *'anarchy, peace and liberty' for all. (* Slogan of 'Crass', '80's punk band )
