Introducing Le Parfumeur Rebelle A naughty name and an even naughtier logo. Curiosity got the better of me and I had to find out more about LPR, the natural and botanical perfumery establishment. I contacted the editor of the site Justine Crane. Justine is a lovely, warm woman who is incredibly open and upfront. No false pretenses or niceties, what you see is what you get. After chatting with her I began to understand more about what Le Parfumeur Rebelle was about and why she used such a bold logo on LPR website. She puts it perfectly in the piece she wrote for NN, when she says "for those who don't appreciate coloring inside the lines". What this says to me is that LPR is open to creativity, individuality and originality. I like that. And the logo, while it never seems to become any less rebellious no matter how many times I look at it, it certainly has grown on me and reminds me of the good old days when I was the rebel, a punk rocker who wished for *'anarchy, peace and liberty' for all. ( * Slogan of 'Crass', '80's punk band )
The journey toward building a natural and botanical perfumers’ resource website that cut through the politics and unfair policies of what was already available began with a simple idea – inclusiveness.
The gates that barred the average Joe from learning coveted French perfumery techniques have been breached. Breached, broken down, and burned in the campfires of the newly emerging alternative perfumer – self-trained, self-regulated and passionate about natural and botanical perfumes. Thanks to the information highway, books, both contemporary and ancient, anybody can learn to be a perfumer. But it doesn’t end there. Networking is an integral part of this art form. This is where Le Parfumeur Rebelle comes into play.
Initially begun as a way to connect natural and botanical perfumers with education and materials’ resources, it has also emerged as a place for non-perfumers to read about the natural and botanical perfumery movement. What you’ll find on LPR today are articles and interviews about perfumers, reviews that pertain to natural and botanical perfumes or other naturally perfumed products, listings of where to find perfumes, raw materials, packaging, general information, books, as well as many relevant off-site links.
LPR is growing organically with the help of many, many voices. There’s no rush to be the next big idea in natural and botanical perfumery, no need to stand on the top of the heap, and no one makes any money from LPR, certainly not the editors. It is a genuine labor of love.
As a way to better connect to their readers, LPR has begun a simple forum. This is where LPR hopes to receive feedback from their readers, what they want to learn more about or to just chat it up with a few of the editors. Should be a fun experiment.
For those who don’t appreciate coloring inside the lines, there is LPR. There are many different perfume making systems or modalities that achieve the same goal – beautiful, safe, saleable scents – many of which don’t require a selling out of principles or following over controlled rules. Diligent study, the right books, great raw materials, and a small group of trustworthy fellow perfume students are all that is required. LPR is there to help make the connections. Justine Crane, Editor of LPR
