Alchemical Work

Many practitioners of alchemy, magic, and other esoteric arts recognize the symbolic nature of the alchemical work. The physical work in the lab represents the inner work of the psyche and the soul.

And many practitioners, once understanding this, cease to see value in performing the work, the logic being that since it is symbolic, it is not of import that it be performed, as it only servers as a representation of the real inner work.
The Emerald Tablet tells us, "that which is below corresponds to that which is above." In this instance, The physical work of alchemy is the below, and the inner work of the soul and psyche is the above. But because one has reached a certain level of understanding, one recognizes that the lower work represents the higher work. But does this mean that the physical work is no longer necessary, that it is no longer of value?

The Emerald Tablet also tells us that "it ascends to heaven, and descends again to Earth, thereby combining within itself the powers of the Above and the Below." And this is key in understanding the importance of the work in the lab. Only when we are working on all levels can we truly combine the above and the below. We must be working with and observing transformation in the physical plane to reflect, within the realm of our senses, the psychic and subtle changes that are taking place within the non-physical reality. This, in effect, 'grounds' our work, and fixes it within our understanding, our memory, and our conscious mind. Likewise, the psychic and subtle transformations happening within us will be reflected in the quality and purity of our work, allowing us to move on to create better medicines and physical manifestations.

Remember the lightning struck tower. This is the danger of losing contact with the physical. This can happen to any practitioner at any time, once she or he has strayed from the vital connection to Earth, through the work.

What good is enlightenment, integration, communication with the higher self, all these lofty goals of alchemy and magic, if we are not using them to perform work of value in our communities, to better the lives of others?

Solve et Coagula. Peace to all.
